This weekend will be great on Turner Classic Movies.
On Saturday night they'll be running four films based on Thorne Smith novels. Topper, Topper Takes a Trip, I Married a Witch and Turnabout. Thorne Smith Movies on Turner
Thorne Smith wrote great, funny, bawdy novels in the 20s & 30s, usually dealing with tired, jaded suburbanites encountering ghosts, leprechauns, witches and Greek Gods, all of whom like to drink heavily and screw mortals (in every sense of the word).
But before that.... before that... at 1:00 a.m. central time Friday night/Saturday morning, Turner will be running the fabulously awful Skidoo. For more than complete information on this disaster here: Skidoo on Turner
Three hints:
1. Groucho Marx smokes pot with Austin Pendleton.
2. Carol Channing tries to seduce Frankie Avalon by stripping down to bra & panties.
3. Jackie Gleason goes on an acid trip.
Bonus hint: the actors who played the Riddler, Penguin & Joker are directed by Mr. Freeze - and none of them appears in any scene with any of the others.
Songs by Harry Nilsson!
It's never been released on VHS or DVD, for excellent reasons!
Reason for including this in a theatre-based group: Gleason. For once, a 50-year-old actor in the late 60s doesn't play a hallucinogenic drug scene as if he's extra-drunk. Even in a bad movie, his acting is good.
